Real estate investments in Fortaleza, RNTourism brought about 1.55 million tourists to Fortaleza in 2003 and estimates for 2004 were at about 1.8 million. Relatively close to Europe - only a 6 hours flight from Lisbon - the area has certain advantages for 'sea & sun' tourism; including it's warm climate, and sometimes spectacular dune landscapes. It has great excursions, with dune buggies driving through the spectacular slopes to beautiful lakes, cliffs, and river banks. Most of the coastline is dominated by large moving dunes; creating often difficult conditions for construction as well as for vegetation. There are some green areas, usually near the borders of the rivers. These dunes are created by strong winds, blowing mostly from July to December. The winds make the temperatures quite bearable but, on the other hand, are perceived as irritating by part of the tourists. One should take great care in building in these areas as the combination of moving sand dunes, strong winds and unpredictable ground water levels are quite traitorous. A little 1 hour east of Fortaleza, Canoa Quebrada is a small, charming village offering great dune views and a small but rapidly growing selection of good restaurants and shops. A long and difficult drive north, one finds Jericoacoara; with idyllic desert landscapes that once was the ultimate escape - but today is slowly turning into another charming but touristy village with pousadas, cybercafés and sushi bars.
