Real estate in São Miguel dos Milagres, Alagoas

On the north side of Alagoas, a little stretch of some 50 km of beaches have been saved from mass development - only because the coastal road makes a huge detour inland.

Known as 'rota ecologica', this piece of the 'coral coast' combines very beautiful beaches with blue-green water and very old, lush palm tree plantations.

The area has only been discovered by a few of high end boutique hotels - pousada do Caju, Milhao d'Estrelas, each with excellent cuisine.

Not surprisingly, a handful of their (international) guests have bought small pieces of beach for their own private villas. As a result, prices have risen out of reach for local low-end developers, while they still are very cheap when compared to their beauty and touristical potential.

As the birds fly, this area lies only 60km from Maceio; but two rivers have so far protected it from development. However, this is bound to change - as a bridge is already being built over the first river; and a major resort is being planned near the second.
